  • Peer Mediated Intervention: Michela Figini-Myers, Behavior Specialist from Mendocino SELPA and Jillian Guevara, Autism Specialist for the Redwood Coast Regional Center in Ukiah, present on ways in which peers (sometimes including siblings) can receive training and even coaching from an adult (e.g., teacher, clinician) to initiate social interactions or instructions in ways that support the learning goal(s) of the learner with autism.
  • Reinforcement: Tito Ross, Team Leader/Service Coordinator at Redwood Coast Regional Center and Jeff Craven, Behavior Specialist for the Humboldt Del-Norte SELPA, present on how to appropriately apply consequences following a learners’ use of a response or skills, and how to increase the likelihood that the learner will use the response in the future.  Reinforcement is effective for many age groups and can be modified or individualized for various settings or environments.
  • Video Modeling:  Amy Hanson, Program Specialist from the Mendocino SELPA and Tiina Purtonen, Service Coordinator at Redwood Coast Regional Center, present on how to use video technology to record and show a demonstration of a desired behavior or skill. The demonstration is shown to the learner, who then has an opportunity to perform the desired behavior either in the moment or at a later point in time. Types of video modeling include adult or peer as video model, video self-modeling, point-of-view video modeling, video prompting, and video feedback.
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC):  Christine Yannone, Assistive Technology Specialist, Humboldt-Del Norte SELPA, Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) provides a means of effective communication for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), many of whom are unable to use conventional speech effectively. This session will cover types of AAC, the consideration process to match communication needs with appropriate AAC options, and supportive teaching strategies.
