Classroom Tools to Teach Point of View and Purpose
CCSS Standard 6
With the Common Core standards, students are expected to identify the author’s purpose and point of view. Using sample text, Dr. Hall will demonstrate how to guide students to initially select one of 3 primary purposes for why the author wrote the text: to inform, to persuade, or to entertain. She’ll show how students will use a graphic organizer to not only note the author’s primary purpose, but also to list the phrases in the text that provide evidence to support the selection of purpose . Dr. Hall will then model how to guide students to analyze not only the author’s point of view, but also the author’s development of the character’s point of view. Participants will receive a graphic organizer and question starters for use immediately in their classrooms.
