Traditional Ecological Knowledge

TEK* STORIES
*(Traditional Ecological Knowledge)
with Dr. Michael Carter (UC Berkeley)
Kate Lowry (Pathmakers)
Kim Smith (Learning Beautiful)

TEK is very local! It’s based on knowing and the relationship with the environment on lives in. An important part of TEK is Native language. Language gives people a way of understanding the world around them. For example, the Yurok has extensive language about fishing technology and plank house engineering. Having so many words about this activity shows its importance to the Yurok community. TEK has been passed down in Indigenous communities for thousands of years and many Indigenous people continue to practice TEK.
