Native American Studies Model Curriculum

With Rebecca Lowry & Michelle Rainer

Through this course, K-12 educators will be exposed to methods in teaching aspects of the Native American Studies Model Curriculum (NASMC) such as Indigenous knowledge systems; cultural strengths: survivance, resistance and community healing: social and emotional literacy; Native authors and artists; math and cultural arts; Native movements and leaders; and connections to national policy and events through a developmental and theoretical lens.

This course is sponsored by the Native American Studies Department, Child Development Department, Humboldt County Office of Education, and the Blue Lake Rancheria.

Online Activities begin: Monday, June 3rd

In-Person Seminar: (choose one location)

Mon-Tues, June 24th & 25th, 9am to 3pm, Instructional Media Center, 301 W. Washington Blvd, Crescent City

Rebecca Lowry, MSW, is a Learning Specialist for Native American Studies at Humboldt County Office of Education. She is Lenape, an enrolled member of the Delaware Tribe of Indians headquartered in Oklahoma. Her professional background includes grantmaking in Native communities, curriculum development, teaching seventh grade, and clinical social work with children.

Michelle Rainer, LCSW, is a coordinator of the Pathway Project and Northern Region SERVE at Cal Poly Humboldt.  She previously worked in child welfare and adoptions for Santa Clara County, and was a clinician at United Indian Health Services. She has been teaching in social work at Humboldt State/Cal Poly Humboldt since 2005.
