May 30 – Dr. Choua Xiong, Community Building
In 1992, May was designated as Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month in the United States. This year, OCDE will mark the occasion with a May webinar series to announce the completion of three model curriculum projects: the Cambodian American Studies Model Curriculum, Hmong History and Cultural Studies Model Curriculum, and Vietnamese American Experiences Model Curriculum. Each of these curricula will be made available in September 2024.
The purpose of this free webinar series is to introduce K-12 educators to the topics, themes, and contexts of the model curricula. These webinars will feature presentations by scholarly experts on critical subjects that include ethnicity, language, war, diaspora, and community-building. The lecturers will present attendees with foundational knowledge to prepare them for implementation of the model curricula in their schools, districts, and communities. Lectures will take place from 4-5:30 pm PDT on each Thursday in May 2024.
