AWR 148: Crisis Management for School Based Incidents: Partnering Rural Law Enforcement, First Responders, and Local School Systems

AWR 148: Crisis Management for School-Based Incidents

AWR 148 is an eight-hour, DHS/FEMA-certified, tuition-free awareness-level course that is delivered in 4-hour sessions over 2 consecutive days. The course is delivered virtually with a live instructor via the Zoom web conference platform. It is designed for school administrators and emergency responders and will educate rural law enforcement personnel as well as school administrators and staff to effectively respond to an emergency involving a school building or an entire school system. The training will provide representatives of rural law enforcement departments with a foundation of knowledge and skills that will enable them to progressively establish a school-based emergency response plan and crisis management team through information sharing and training.

Schools in small, rural, and remote areas across the country account for almost 23 percent of the total student population (more than 11 million students). Rural schools, law enforcement, and other emergency responders are often limited in resources. It is imperative that all potentially affected parties collaborate on planning, preparing, communicating, responding, and recovering from a school-based incident.

Topics include (but not limited to):

  • Introduction to Incident Planning and Preparedness
  • Proactive Threat Mitigation
  • Incident Response
  • Incident Recovery
  • Vulnerability Assessments
  • Threat Assessment Management
  • Incident Defusing and Debriefing
  • Reunification
  • Anniversaries, Memorials, “Copy-Cats”

Who should attend:

  • All First Responders, especially Law Enforcement
  • School Administrators
  • School Safety and Security Personnel
  • Community Emergency Management Personnel
  • Community Mental Health Personnel
  • Community Stakeholders

The Rural Domestic Preparedness Consortium (RDPC) now offers virtual, instructor-led training opportunities using Zoom for Government. This new training modality offers a secure, encrypted environment so that emergency responders can train virtually anywhere.  This 8-hour course will be presented over two consecutive days. Each day will consist of one 4-hour training session.  Participants are required to use their own computer, tablet, or smartphone during the course.  Each participant should log in a few minutes early to test the audio and/or video connection. While downloading the latest Zoom client app is beneficial, it’s not required.
