Educator Leader Fellowship Humboldt County History-Social Studies

Topics – Ethnic Studies, Seal of Civic Engagement, HSS Framework, Help transform History-Social Science content in our county

Saturday March 19, 2022  1pm-5pm REDWOOD ROOM, HCOE

Why?

We are living and educating through a quickly changing world and we need History and Social Science (HSS) teachers as well as other educators who can lead the way. During the last few years, California has implemented a new HSS Framework for K12, the State Seal of Civic Engagement, and the Ethnic Studies Model Curriculum. To address all of these changes, the Humboldt County Office of Education is creating a Teacher Leader Fellowship who will deeply explore these intertwined strands and envision a more relevant and engaging HSS education for all K12 students. We are looking for dynamic educators who want to help design new learning opportunities in these three areas for students in Humboldt County.

Who are we serving?

We are collaborating with teacher leaders and community members to support the teaching of History-Social Science in Humboldt County, to increase their cultural competence in teaching HSS.

We strive to empower students to be engaged in their communities and civically involved, to understand and celebrate their own and other ethnic and cultural heritage both locally and nationally.

We are developing strong community connections representative of diverse ethnic and social groups.

What will be the impact on students?

  • Equitable access to culturally accurate and representative history
  • Increased engagement
  • Increased positive social identity
  • Increased reading, writing, and critical analysis skills

What will be the outcomes?

  • Leadership projects
  • Documented classroom implementations
  • Professional development literature
  • Classroom library materials
  • Resource sharing
  • Building a community of practice

Following Dates are Virtual on Zoom:

What we ask of participants:

Attendance is essential for the community-building aspect of the fellowship. There will also be independent reading expectations and a culminating project in which participants will design and share with the Fellowship a professional learning project for their respective school communities. Stipends for participants and books for your professional and classroom libraries will be available.
