Unit Planning for Implementation of the Common Core Standards
Participants will have the opportunity to create unit plans for specific content areas of Mathematics or ELA (including Social Studies & Science).
Keynote Speaker Nancy S. Brownell is the Senior Fellow for Common Core Systems Implementation with responsibilities for working with both the department of education and the state board on transitioning to the common core. Nancy has over 35 years of experience as a teacher, administrator, school board member, and educational leader, supporting the goals of increased student achievement and equity for all students. She has taught grades K-University and has expertise implementing standards-based curricular and instructional programs, assessment, and coaching district and school teams. She holds degrees in English and Educational Administration.
Unit and Lesson Design Aligned to the ELA CCSS, will include a presentation by Kathy Glass, Educational Consultant. She will provide an introduction of the highlights and expectations of the ELA California Common Core Standards, followed by an introduction to a unit map template that represents key components in unit design. Participants will begin to create a targeted unit of study with Kathy’s guidance of examples, explanations and modeling. Additionally, she will share elements of effective lesson planning and model selected instructional strategies.
Unit Design and the Math Common Core State Standards, presented by Ben Ford PhD of the North Bay Math Project, will support teachers, students and administrators in their transition to the CCSS in mathematics, using current classroom materials. Participating teams will collaboratively design a unit of instruction built around the CCSS, incorporating CCSS mathematical practices and content shifts, MARS assessments, and different formats for lesson design.
